This week offers lots of opportunities for civic engagement, Tuesday is election day, and the NIC community meeting. Wednesday MassDOT Bowker Overpass public meeting. 

COVID booster news: Sept. 4: Governor Healy announced that CVS and Walgreens will begin scheduling and administering the COVID booster to eligible Massachusetts residents starting Friday, September 5. Read the Healey administration press release. Berklee opened their newest facility in the West Fens last week at 1249 Boylston Street (former CVS site), after an extensive renovation. The 41,000-square-foot building features dedicated spaces for Berklee’s academic institutes, nine general-use classrooms, and five state-of-the-art dance studios. 

Sentencing News on Ex-city councilor Tania Fernandes Anderson: On Friday, September 5th, US District Judge Indira Talwani sentenced Anderson to one month in prison on federal corruption charges. She ordered Fernandes Anderson to self-report to an as-yet-to-be designated federal prison on Oct. 17. She also ordered her to pay $13,000 in restitution.

MBTA Green Line D Branch service will be suspended between Riverside and Kenmore for nine days, September 3 – 11. Free and accessible Express and Local shuttle bus services will replace trains between Riverside and Kenmore.Visit the website for info on system-wide notices. MBTA Announces September Service Changes | News

Tuesday, September 9, 6:00 PM, The Fenway Neighborhood Improvement Committee (NIC)– virtual and in-person in the Steve Heck Room on the 1st Floor of 1140 Boylston Street. (NIC) is an all volunteer group of Fenway Neighborhood residents, organizations and businesses, facilitated by Berklee College of Music, with the goal of encouraging shared stewardship of the Fenway Neighborhood. 

Please RSVP here if you intend to join either in person or virtually. In addition to community updates, Berklee President Jim Lucchese, who joined the institution as its 5th president in January, will join to share a few thoughts and meet neighbors. Refreshments will also be served.

September is a great time to be out and about in New England, so we’re having an EAST FENWAY BLOCK PARTY on Thursday, September 4th from 4:30-7:30 pm at Symphony Community Park. After the party, head over to the Isabella Stewart Gardner Musuem for Free First Thursday – a special offer for block party attendees below.

NEWS ON BOWKER OVERPASS WORK

MassDOT has implemented tree protection and pruning around the Bowker Overpass including the removal of approximately 50 trees.

NEWS ON BOWKER OVERPASS WORK

MassDOT will begin tree protection and pruning around the Bowker Overpass later this week. Tree removal is tentatively scheduled to begin August 24^th  to last approx. one week: one night shift is required on the Pike, then work will be done during daytime hours on local streets for the removal of approximately 50 trees. 

Temporary traffic control workzones commence: Aug 24th on Ipswich Street; Aug 25th on the Charlesgate On Ramp. We will follow up with specific traffic advisories for each stage as we get closer. MassDOT is planning a virtual legislative briefing and public information meeting for the week of September 8^th.

September is a great time to be out and about in New England, so we’re having an EAST FENWAY BLOCK PARTY on Thursday, September 4th from 4:30-7:30 pm at Symphony Community Park. Details coming soon!

Saturday, August 2, 3 pm – 8 pm, The Junkyard Market Jamboree  at New Edgerly Plaza –The market features local vendors offering art, vintage clothing, handmade jewelry, and more, alongside a live funk and jazz jam session showcasing talented local musicians. A special line dancing session at 6 p.m. will be provided by the Boston Rhythm Riders, supported by a grant from Age Strong Boston. Weather permitting, the market is Saturday Aug 2nd (rain date August 3rd).  Thanks to Berklee College of Music, the Boston Streets Cabinet, Age Strong Boston, Boston Rhythm Riders, and Junkyard LLC for helping make this event possible.

Promoting a vital and sustainable neighborhood

Dear Members and Friends:

We are now in  the “Dog Days” of Summer. Some think the phrase means the days are so hot, they’re “not fit for a dog”. However, the saying actually dates back to Roman times when time was kept according to the constellations. The star Sirius, known as the “dog star” (for its dog shape) would appear in the sky near the end of July, marking the start of the hottest days of the year. The Romans referred to this time period as “dies caniculares” or “days of the dog star,” which was eventually translated as just “dog days.”  Check out the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind, Inc. for important ways to care for your canine during this hot weather.

We hope you are enjoying the array of local summer activities – concerts, fitness series, street markets (check out the Junkyard Market on Saturday 8/2!), and open Newbury Street. 3 pm – 8 pm, The Junkyard Market Jamboree  at New Edgerly Plaza –The market features local vendors offering art, vintage clothing, handmade jewelry, and more, alongside a live funk and jazz jam session showcasing talented local musicians. A special line dancing session at 6 p.m. will be provided by the Boston Rhythm Riders, supported by a grant from Age Strong Boston. Weather permitting, the market is Saturday Aug 2nd (rain date August 3rd).

For music lovers: we’ve added another date to the Symphony Park Concert Series, at 39 Edgerly Road to make up for the rained out July 8 date! NEW DATE: Tuesday, August 5th. See new flyer attached!

For everyone! Music, arts-market and dancing!  

The Junkyard Market Jamboree is a free, community-focused event celebrating Boston’s creative spirit. The market features local vendors offering art, vintage clothing, handmade jewelry, and more, alongside a live funk and jazz jam session showcasing talented local musicians. A special line dancing session at 6 p.m. will be provided by the Boston Rhythm Riders, supported by a grant from Age Strong Boston. Weather permitting, the market is Saturday Aug 2nd (rain date August 3rd).

To track and document feedback, there is an online FPCNC SURVEY which you can fill in to report your comments for each concert date. The areas of concern on the survey are, traffic, noise levels, park impacts, trash management, etc., and there is a space for your open ended comments. Annual reports are compiled for review by the city and the FPCNC, and are meant to inform the City of Boston and the Red Sox of any pending issues. These surveys can be of great help if submitted per event. If you have an experience related to the concerts, please report so it can be documented and addressed. Thank you.

We took last week off, but we’re back, and it’s officially summer! The 2025 summer solstice arrived at 10:42 p.m., June 20 – with the longest stretch of daylight all year, as the sun crossed the sky for a full 15 hours.

Porchfest is Saturday, June 21, with great weather! It’s the last week of Pride Month. And the Fenway Farmer’s Market is back starting Sunday, June 22nd!

Alert!! Extreme heat warning Sunday through Tuesday: temperatures expected to reach 100-degrees. Please take care to stay hydrated, avoid overexposure, and watch out for any vulnerable neighbors! Have a plan in place to get relief from the heat!

BOSTON CITY COUNCILOR for District 7 (including the East Fens) RESIGNS

Boston City Councilor Tania Fernandes Anderson resigns, effective 7/4/2025.

The Councilor for D7 was convicted last month on federal corruption charges, has officially resigned and her last day will be on Independence Day. As reported in the Boston Herald,councilors can be removed from the body only after sentencing for a felony, rather than conviction, per state law. Fernandes Anderson is set to be sentenced in federal court on July 29. Eleven District 7 candidates have qualified to appear on the ballot for the Sept. 9 preliminary election. The two candidates who receive the most votes in the primary will move on to the Nov. 4 general election. City officials have indicated that they would prefer to have the next District 7 councilor seated immediately after the November election, rather than continuing with the vacancy until the swearing-in ceremony in early January.

Wednesday, June 25, 10 – 11 am, Tai Chi with Sifu Huan Zhang (last class of this series) Symphony Park, 39 Edgerly Road. Join neighbors for this gentle introductory tai chi class. In event of rain, classes will be indoors at Morville House, 100 Norway Street. Made possible by a grant from Berklee College of Music and the City of Boston.

2025 Swingin’ in the Fens – Noah Allen & the Peace – The sound of jazz will fill the Fenway at Swingin’ in the Fens, the annual free concert presented by Berklee in partnership with the Boston Parks and Recreation Department’s ParkARTS at Ramler Park, a jewel of the Fenway neighborhood located at 130 Peterborough Street. Volunteers are welcome to sign up for all dates and both locations! 

The MGH/MBG Community Care Health Clinic will now rotate locations between the West Fenway and East Fenway locations from 1-5 p.m. on Fenway Cares dates. Upcoming schedule: Morville House, 100 Norway Street on 7/2, and Fenway Community Center on 7/16. Offerings may include blood pressure monitoring, blood sugar testing, COVID-19 and flu vaccines.

Thursdays, through Aug 28, 10 – 11 am, Chair Yoga with Michelle, Symphony Park, 39 Edgerly Road. Join Boston Parks Summer Fitness Series for energizing chair yoga, taught by Michelle Coleman. This class prioritizes breathing, feeling, and dropping into the body and is designed for those who do not want to practice on the floor. The Boston Herald reports: Boston Mayor Michelle Wu signed the $4.8 billion city budget, opting to accept all City Council changes for the first time since the body was given the ability to amend the mayor’s spending plan, rather than exercise her veto power. Wednesday, June 11, 10 – 11:00 a.m., Mayor Michelle Wu’s Neighborhood Coffee Hours, Back Bay Fens – Kelleher Rose Garden (rain location: FCC)   A unique opportunity to speak directly with the Mayor and staff from City departments about open space in our neighborhood.  If you have questions or general topics for the Mayor to cover, please fill out this form in advance of the event!

Dunkin’ will be on-site to fuel the local community with freshly brewed Iced Coffee and assorted fan-favorite MUNCHKINS® donut hole treats. Dunkin’ will brew up even more fun with customized lawn games and gift card giveaways. Residents at each event are eligible to win a raffle prize from Dunkin’.Each family in attendance will receive a free flowering plant provided by the Boston Parks and Recreation Department, while supplies last. Fresh fruit will be provided by Star Market. Additional support by City Express.

Wednesday, June 11, 6 – 8 p.m., Fenway Civic Association Annual Picnic, Back Bay Fens – Kelleher Rose Garden (rain date: Thursday, June 12th) 

Friends, flowers, food & music – it’s picnic time again!!! 

Last year we had a phenomenal turnout, this year the weather looks great (forecast for sun and warm temperatures in the 80s! Great to be out and about before the next wave of weekend rain!!! We’ll have burgers, chips, watermelon, beverages.. Feel free to bring your own picnic and a blanket, and enjoy the beautiful flowers, music and, of course, the beautiful people! We can’t wait to see you!
