The Week Ahead

Dear Members and Friends:

This week, the nation mourns the loss of the 39th US President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on Sunday, December 29, 2024 at the age of 100.

James Earl Carter Jr.

1924-2024

39th President of the United States

America and the world lost an extraordinary leader, statesman and humanitarian” as well as a man of “great character and courage, hope and optimism.”

He saved, lifted, and changed the lives of people all across the globe” – President Joe Biden

President Biden has declared January 9 a National Day of Mourning and called on “people of the world who share our grief to join us in this solemn observance.”

“In our democracy, the only title higher and more powerful than that of president is the title of citizen. It is every citizen’s right and duty to help shape the future legacy of our nation.”

The Week Ahead

Dear Members and Friends:

Say goodbye to 2024 … time to ring in the New Year!

Events throughout the city

There’s a long list of wintery fun things to do, see, and eat compiled by Boston Uncovered, including Holiday Lights along Comm Ave, and a new winter festival in Charlestown, where  Winter Fest transforms Hood Park into a two-acre winter holiday light show, food, fun and ice skating rink  – making it the biggest holiday themed attraction in the city. In the Fenway, there’s Time Out Market, having a “glow up” on New Year’s Eve and of course, to cap it off, there’s FIRST NIGHT

FIRST NIGHT!

Full schedule of Events on Tuesday, December 31st

First Night has been the best party in town since 1976! Events start early on Tuesday, December 31st – free and open to all! There’s so much to do, plan ahead to enjoy the live music, a 6pm parade then fireworks at 7pm and again at midnight, ice sculpturestasty treats, and many family activities.

New Year traditions… many you’ve heard of – some, maybe not!

Here’s a list of some New Year’s traditions from around the world

Some traditions focus on letting the past go, or bringing good fortune and luck into the future, exchanging meaningful symbolic gifts, or just making a lot of noise and, of course, fire and fireworks! Here are two hot takes on old traditions:

Panama: Burning away the old year’s grudges

Panamanians bid adieu to the past by setting ablaze effigies representing their year’s grievances. This cathartic ritual symbolizes letting go of negative experiences and embracing the fresh start that the new year brings. The burning of the effigies is a symbolic act of letting go.

Germany: Molten lead predicts the future

Germans turn to molten lead for a glimpse into their future. On New Year’s Eve, they melt lead into various shapes, and the resulting forms are interpreted to predict events in the year ahead.

The Week Ahead

Dear Members and Friends:

Happy Thanksgiving!

A time to be thankful for family, friends and community. On Friday, if you’re in the Back Bay Fens – walk off that meal and drop in to the Shattuck Visitor Center (across from the MFA) for some complimentary cider and check out this lovely resource.

Our New England Thanksgiving tradition dates back 400 years.

The Pilgrim’s first Thanksgiving was documented in a letter dated December, 1621 by Edward Winslow, one of 102 people aboard the Mayflower. By March of 1621, the pilgrims had entered into a treaty of peace and protection with the great Chief Massasoit (born 1580 or 1581 in Montaup, Bristol, Rhode Island), leader of the Wampanoag Tribe, allowing the pilgrims to live in their territory. By the fall, 50 Pilgrims had perished, leaving 22 men, 5 women, and 25 children to celebrate the first harvest Thanksgiving with the Wampanoag. Massasoit is credited with helping the Pilgrims survive their early years in New England.

Wampanoag history dates back at least 12,000 years.

The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe, aka the People of the First Light, has inhabited present day Massachusetts and Eastern Rhode Island for more than 12,000 years

2024 – Brown University returns ancestral lands to the Pokanoket Wampanoag.

This November, Brown University transferred 255 acres in Bristol, R.I., to the Pokanoket Wampanoag Indian tribe, the original stewards. The land is the ancestral home of Metacom, the leader of the Pokanoket Wampanoag people who was also known as King Philip, and the site of his death in 1676 during King Philip’s War. Metacom was a son of Massasoit, the chief who first welcomed the Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony in 1621.

The Week Ahead

Dear Members and Friends:

November is a most civic and social month. Time for the nation to cast its votehonor our veterans, and, as we set back the clock and the days get shorter and darker, we bring light through social celebrations to kick-off the holiday season. Celebrate Thanksgiving rituals, be it Friendsgiving, A Day of Service, a family gathering, homecoming, or football and turkey!

As we finally make it to the polls, take a moment to reflect on the power of your one vote. More often than thought, a few votes have changed an election outcome. Have your say, it’s your day.

POLLS OPEN TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 2024 7 a.m. until 8 p.m.

November’s birth flower is the chrysanthemum. Generally, chrysanthemums represent cheerfulness. A red one conveys, “I love you.” White symbolizes truth or pure love. A yellow one indicates slighted love.

For those without a home, November is a lonely and dangerous time, but there is hope and help available. Looking for ways to help via volunteering or donations? Check out these links for Pine Street InnWinter Clothing Drive – The Emerald Necklace Conservancy (November 4- December 2) and Boston Public Library Spice Bank (November 1- April 15).

This month, The Fenway News  celebrates five decades of community-supported, hyperlocal news (see event details below).

And, a very interesting piece of news from October you may have missed: The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum purchased the 62-unit apartment building adjacent to its new wing. Located at 14 Palace Road and 11 Tetlow Street in Boston’s Fenway Court, the five-floor residential building now makes the museum, constructed as a 15th-century Venetian palace, a landlord for its tenants. The museum said its acquisition of the building was a move to safeguard the area from potential development that could threaten the current state of the museum’s surrounding area and the experience of visitors.

Thanks to all who turned up last Friday, November 1st for the inaugural street party at Edgerly Plaza. A wonderful example of civic engagement! The Fenway Civic Association’s Parks and Open Space Committee championed the idea several years ago to transform a lightly used roadway into a public plaza, increasing pedestrian safety and enhancing access to the adjacent Harry Ellis Dickson Park. The celebration had people dancing in the (former) street, and could later host City Hall on the Go. A great addition to the area.

Boston Streets Cabinet Announces Installation of New Edgerly PlazaFenway Civic Association came to party with lots of Fenway friends who showed their line dancing talents, played games and generally had a good time in the new plaza.  We loved seeing our peeps from the FCDC, Fenway Community Center, Fenway Alliance, and Operation PEACE, Jay Livingstone and Maccon Bonner, along with the City’s transportation team. Enjoy the Plaza!
