The Week Ahead

Dear Members and Friends:

January is typically a time of introspection, hibernation and planning… perhaps you need to do some research or catch up on your reading? We could soon enjoy the benefits of a local library branch, as is in discussion with the 1400 Boylston project. You’ll need to plan your public travel this month, as T work continues. As students return from intersession (as evidenced by the crowds in the coffee shops) you might enjoy a coffee with Maggie, our City Hall liaison, on Fridays at the FCC. Speaking of students, there’s a student housing development BPDA meeting regarding 840 Columbus on Tuesday.

On January 9th, Mayor Wu delivered her State of the City Address, outlining her vision of Boston as a home for every generation. Part of this vision is a reworking of the BRA/BPDA structure – related to this, House Bill  H4065 will be introduced this Monday at the Statehouse.

Squares + Streets is yet another new planning and zoning initiative which is described as “creating new plans that can be implemented within 5-10 years.” What those plans are, where they come from, why and how we navigate yet another government layer while the BRA and BPDA are morphing, with seemingly non-stop development meetings… the rapid-fire changes are causing concern and controversy in the civic realm.

Maybe you’ve made a resolution to live a healthier new year? Drop by the  the YMCA on Sat Jan 27 for the Fenway/Kenmore Healthy Neighborhood Initiative event!

For this and more, read on…

The Week Ahead

Dear Members and Friends:

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is the only national holiday officially dedicated as a national day of service. This year, the King Center theme is: “It starts with me: shifting the cultural climate through the study and practice of Kingian nonviolence.”

In his speech, Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community,Dr. King speaks of Operation Breadbasket, a civic action which addressed issues of housing, food insecurity, equity, employment and personal dignity.Dr. King spoke to the issues we still struggle with today. King “spoke truth to power” calling out injustices and demanding change.

“Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice. Justice at its best is love correcting everything that stands against love.”

On Monday, the Museum of Fine Arts and Citizens invite the community to commemorate the life, legacy and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at a free open house for Massachusetts residentsClick here for details.

The BSO will celebrate with a special concert at 4 p.m. by the Boston Children’s Chorus—In the Name of Love: 21st Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Tribute Concert.

Dear Members and Friends:

Happy New Year ~ Out with the Old, in with the New.

Auld Lang Syne

by Robert Burns, 1759 -1796

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,

And never brought to mind?

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,

And auld lang syne!

Chorus:

For auld lang syne, my dear,

     For auld lang syne.

     We’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,

     For auld lang syne.

Robert Burns, Scottish poet, pursued both love and poetry with uncommon zeal. He remains an enduring cultural icon for Scots around the world; most famously, his “Auld Lang Syne” is sung each New Year’s Eve. Read more about the poet here.

Burns in the Fenway – walking around the Fens, you may have come upon this statue created in 1920, which was spirited away for four decades, but made a triumphant return! Read more on the Fenway connection!

THE WEEK AHEAD

Wednesday, Nov 29, 11:00 a.m. Ribbon-cutting ceremony for Phase 2 of the Muddy River Restoration Project will take place at the Duck House on Agassiz Road. Learn about the project here.

The Restoration Project was done in two phases. Phase 1 involved daylighting a section of the River near the Landmark Center in Boston, where Our Muddy had been buried for decades under a large parking lot. Phase 1 work was completed in 2016 and is now the site of the Justine Mee Liff Park.

Phase 2 began in 2020, and will be completed in 2023 with the handoff of maintenance responsibilities from the US Army Corps to the non-federal sponsors. Phase 2 involved dredging and ecosystem restoration from Leverett Pond in Brookline to Charlesgate in Boston.

With safety in mind, temporary construction fencing was installed to ensure protected work sites for the contractors and their equipment. Fences will be removed and full pedestrian access will be restored in phases as the landscaping in each area is completed. Celebrate this great accomplishment at the Phase 2 Ribbon Cutting event!

The Week Ahead

Talking Turkey (day). Some fun facts on the holiday…

Annual celebrations of the fall harvest span the world’s cultures, continents and millennia.

Our New England tradition goes back 400 years.

Much of what is known about the Pilgrim’s first Thanksgiving comes from a letter dated December 1621 by Edward Winslow, one of 102 people aboard the Mayflower who sailed to Cape Cod in November, 1620 to settle in Plymouth that December. By March, they had a treaty with the Wampanoag allowing them to live in their territory. By the fall, 50 Pilgrims had perished, weakened from scurvy and pneumonia, leaving 22 men, 5 women, and 25 children to celebrate the first harvest Thanksgiving with the Wampanoag. Wilson wrote that the event lasted 3 days.

A tradition begins.

In 1623Governor Bradford called for a religious fast. Fasting and thanksgiving became common practice in New England. In 1789George Washington issued the first US government Thanksgiving proclamation calling on Americans to express gratitude for the end of the war of independence and ratification of the U.S. Constitution. In 1817New York became the first of several states to adopt an annual Thanksgiving holiday, celebrated on different days. Alexander Young rediscovered Winslow’s letter and made it famous in his 1841 book Chronicles of the Pilgrim Fathers. Governor Bradford’s papers, stolen by the British during the Revolutionary War, were recovered in the 1850s, and inspired magazine editor Sarah Josepha Hale to campaign for a national Thanksgiving holiday

A national holiday.

In 1863, during the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed the final Thursday in November as a NATIONAL Thanksgiving holiday to foster unity. American football games being played on Thanksgiving Day dates back to 1876, shortly after the game had been invented, as it was a day that most people had off from work. The first Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade was held in 1924 to kick off the Holiday shopping season, with Santa at the end. In 1942 President Roosevelt designated the fourth Thursday in November (which is not always the last Thursday) as Thanksgiving Day, as he wanted to extend the holiday shopping season a week!
