The Week Ahead

Dear Members and Friends:

Last Monday the FCA held a public discussion on the question: How will the City of Boston protect its parks? There was a large turnout and robust discussion, however many questions were left unanswered. Later in the week, Mayor Wu announced the appointment of Kairos Shen as the City’s new Chief of Planning. We hope Mr. Shen will respect and protect our valuable parkland assets, and work to fulfill the campaign promises made by Mayor Wu for a greener, more efficient, more equitable city for generations to come.

A positive model of environmental action: The Muddy River has gone through major renovation and enhancement work. Last year, the CRWA started a community-led visioning process to find a way to clean it up. They’ve been hard at work understanding the watershed conditions, the major sources of pollution, and how the watershed may experience climate change. This October 1st, attend the webinar Muddy River: Heart of Fenway to hear what’s been learned and what you can do to impact the future of the Muddy River watershed.

Fall in Fenway is a thing of beauty. Trees put on a colorful performance, the weather is good for a walk in the park, a flea-market, a farmer’s market, al-fresco dining, and on Monday, October 14, enjoy the annual  Opening Our Doors celebration of the Fenway Cultural District – with art exhibits, performances, nature and historical walks, art activities, open houses and more. For ongoing cultural events, check the ArtsBoston calendar

THE WEEK AHEAD

Tuesday, October 1, 7pm (virtual meeting), Muddy River: The Heart of Fenway

The Muddy River watershed reaches across Boston, Brookline, and Newton, and contributes significant amounts of pollution to the Charles River. You probably don’t realize this, but much of the water making it’s way into the Muddy is coming from storm water run-off and illicit and leaky sewage pipes all throughout the watershed. We can clean it up, but we need widespread public support. That’s where you come in! Last year, the Charles River Watershed Association started a community-led visioning process with several meetings and webinars to date. The purpose of the meetings is to educate, inform and discuss what can be done, and to formulate a plan of action. All concerned members of the public are invited to help envision how to move forward.  Watch the Sept 26 webinar recording here. And/or follow this link to register for the October 1 meeting. Do you think we can ever swim in the Charles? Well, we’d need to fix the Muddy first! Let’s fully restore the Muddy. If you like this idea – help spread the word and attend the webinar. Is it too big a task? Is it too expensive to fix? “When there are enough people who care, the money materializes.” –Emily Norton CRWA

The Week Ahead

Dear Members and Friends:

We all know the Fenway is an incredible place to live, work and visit; and with all its charms and assets, the Fenway is a magnet for development. How can we have sustainable growth that respects, protects and enhances our natural assets, which form the basis of this urban oasis? The Back Bay Fens was born of a vision to serve the public as the city inevitably grows – a natural space providing equal access to air, light, healthy recreation and natural beauty to an increasingly stressed and dense urban environment. The Back Bay Fens is a living asset we must constantly care for.

Since its inception, the Back Bay Fens has needed and received city protection. The recent wave of development is challenging the current protections. How can we ensure the Fens not only survives, but thrives? This is why we invite you to join us in conversation this Monday night.

Monday, September 23, 6-8pm, FCA presents an in-person, public meeting on: Parks and Public Space Protection in the Fenway, at the Fenway Community Center.

Dear Members and Friends:

Before you know it, the lazy, hazy days of summer will be replaced by the hustle and bustle of fall, with September moving days just weeks away! Enjoy some late summer fun in the city, with a great array of outdoor offerings listed below.

The plaza at Lyrik (Parcel 12 – over the Mass Pike, along Mass Ave., between Boylston and Newbury) just opened to the public. With tons of public space to meet, seat & greet your friends, and a sky deck for viewing the sunsets – it will be interesting to see how this develops. Lyrik Back Bay

SHOUT OUT TO RAMLER PARK – Happy 20th Anniversary!!!

Ramler Park at 130 Peterborough was born from a great love of the neighborhood through the generous donation of land by the David & Dorothy Ramler family and the tireless work of local Fenway volunteer activists. This month marks the 20th year since the grand opening in August, 2004, when Mayor Menino cut the ribbon to officially open Ramler Park! We’re grateful to the Ramler family, Mayor Menino, Boston Parks, The Friends of Ramler Park, and all who helped create this haven. Keep the park at peak condition by donating to The Friends of Ramler Park.

The Week Ahead

Dear Members and Friends:

News on delivery drivers and mopeds in the Fenway and Back Bay – this summer we’ve seen a preponderance of delivery drivers in the Fenway, some on unregistered vehicles, causing concerns for safety and a pushback from residents. The Boston Police are taking action, including a sweep on July 8th resulting in confiscation of 13 vehicles and two arrests. On Aug. 9, the police responded to a 911 call regarding a group of drivers ‘camping out’ on Peterborough Street adjacent to Ramler Park, and in private parking spaces, and advised drivers of registration laws, safety and trespassing issues, and were told to leave. The police advise calling 911 if you experience problems with drivers, so police can react in real time. Posting on 311 is too slow. See something, say something.

News: Berklee Files IMP Amendment to Lease, Renovate 1249 Boylston. (West Fens – former site of 2-level CVS pharmacy and Brigham & Women’s admin offices). If approved, Berklee College of Music will sign a 16-year lease (with an option to extend). The college proposes use for classrooms, dance studios, and support space, with an 1,800 SF ground-floor café, restaurant, gallery, or similar space with public access. Submit comments to the newly formed City of Boston Planning Office by Aug. 25; no public meetings are scheduled. Berklee’s projects a year to complete renovations, starting late 2024. The college launched a master planning process that will form the basis of a new 10-year IMP to be filed in 2026. For more information, or to submit a comment, visit https://www.bostonplans.org/projects/institutional-master-plans/higher-ed/berklee-college-of-music#c

News on Boston – Bowker Overpass bridge replacement and construction public information meeting – was held on July 11th. The work will begin in 2025, and will have a major impact on the Fens. View the presentation with project plans here.

Summer fun, music, movies, flea- and farmer’s markets, open streets – get it while you can. MUSIC: Berklee Summer in the City present hundreds of concert performances throughout the city. Ramler Park hosts the next concert on Aug. 20 MOVIES: MFA screens the Bob Marley biopic 8/20, Movie Mondays at 401 Park (new)! And Sunday Flea Markets at the Station – also the Charlesgate Farmer’s Market and Open Newbury (see ongoing)… a lot to get you out and about, and enjoy the summer.
