The Week Ahead

Dear Members and Friends:

On Memorial Day, we honor those who have given their lives in military service for our nation, and we pray for a true and lasting peace.

THE WEEK AHEAD

Monday, May 26 – Memorial Day

It was Decoration Day at first. In the mid-1860s in the aftermath of the Civil War, John A. Logan, the Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Army of Republic, chose May 30, 1868, as a day to decorate the graves of Union troops across the nation. Logan’s extraordinary transformation from an avid racist and Lincoln opponent to an advocate for the Union and then an African American Civil Rights and education champion is a fascinating American story that should be better known.

In 1950, President Harry Truman proclaimed: Memorial Day, which has long been set aside for paying tribute to those who lost their lives in war, shall henceforth be dedicated also as a day for Nation-wide prayer for permanent peace.

Sunday, June 1, 2025 Boston Walk for EpilepsyEpilepsy Foundation New England fundraiser walk will start at Fenway Park, cross Boylston Street, and walk around the Back Bay Fens. No road closures or park closures occur as a result. Registration starts at 10 a.m. and walking starts at 12 p.m.

The Week Ahead

Dear Members and Friends:

It was wonderful to see old and new friends at the FCA Annual Flower Share – thanks again to Northeastern’s Office for Community Engagement, for helping beautify the Fenway East & West!!!! We’ll share some photos next week.

Each spring our neighborhood goes through our own seasonal changes as colleges clear out, the Victory Gardens are abuzz with cleanups and plantings, our parks are alive with free community fitness programs and music series, there’s dining al-fresco and baseball is in full swing… there’s plenty to put a spring in your step!

Mark your calendars for June 11th, for two engaging events in the Back Bay Fens, by the Kelleher Rose Garden: start your day with some quality time (and coffee) at Mayor Wu’s coffee hour, 10am-11am and come back to smell the flowers (again!) at the FCA’s Annual Picnic at 6pm-8pm. The Kelleher Rose Garden will be in full bloom – a truly gorgeous display and a wonderful gem in our Emerald Necklace.

In Development News…

Last Wednesday, there was a virtual public meeting on the LONGWOOD PLACE DEVELOPMENT (305 Brookline Ave)  link to Project Page for full details. At the request of Fenway Civic,  the comment date for Phase One was extended to May 14. Some issues discussed at the meeting were, building height and massing, building footprints and open space, the need for a moving shadow analysis and a wind analysis, the related studies already in progress on shadow impacts and transportation, community benefits, mitigation, impact questions and questions on possible heat island and ground level-sinking effects. The project page shows the presentation, meeting recordings, and an online option to submit your comments up until May 14th.

The Northeastern IMP (masterplan for the next 10 years) meeting was held last Thursday, the project page shows the presentation, meeting recordings, and an online option to comment by May 16th. NEU gave an overview of what’s in the guiding document – you can view the recorded video here. Notable are the major additions of housing and the sports center. Post-presentation discussion included a request for shadow studies related to new developments; questions on the percentage of beds provided per total student population, and how this impacts housing in the Fenway; task force procedures and conflicts; questions on the plan around a new student housing building at 21 Forsyth across from the MFA.

Coming soon… development at One Joslin Place in Longwood Medical Area, close to the Longwood Place development. There will be a public meeting on Wednesday, May 7th to discuss the overall Institutional Master Plan project and the potential impacts. (details below).

The amount of planned development is quite staggering when you think of these two major projects in the LMA along Brookline Ave, add in the Fenway Corners West, Fenway Corners North, 2 Charlesgate, 20 Charlesgate, 1400 Boylston, 165 Park Drive, 60 Kilmarnock, 112-114 Queensbury St, Northeastern’s plans, etc.. Nevermind there are some major projects around 401 Park under construction, and upcoming at St. Mary’s. Don’t forget there will be a 5-year project replacing Bowker Overpass! How will the Fenway absorb all this, how will our daily lives be impacted? What types of coordination, cooperation and communication will there be? We’ll be keeping you informed.
