The Week Ahead – special edition!

Dear Members and Friends:

Hey, we know it’s early for this notice… but with THREE very important celebrations, we wanted to get your attention today: Juneteenth celebrations continue through Monday; on Sunday, walk the Emerald Necklace with the ENC President!; Tuesday the Fenway Civic Association hosts its annual Rose Garden Picnic; hope to see you out there! for details on this and more, keep reading!

JUNETEENTH

Juneteenth celebrations continue…

Officially recognized as a state holiday in Massachusetts in 2020, Juneteenth was designated as a federal holiday last year. The holiday marks the day, June 19, 1865, when all enslaved people were officially freed after troops marched to Galveston, Texas to enforce the emancipation proclamation, announced two years earlier. 

Friday, June 16, 2 – 8:30 p.m. Embrace Ideas Festival 2023 Block party at RCC (Roxbury Community College) music, food trucks, free! Details here

Saturday, June 17, 10 a.m – 2:30 p.m. Juneteenth Joy celebration in Hyde Park The second annual Juneteenth Joy: Focus on Freedom celebration. Free and open to the public at Francis D. Martini Memorial Shell Park. With ceremonies by the 54 Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment Company A, followed by an afternoon of live performances, a Black artisan fair, awards, exhibits, games, and food vendors.

Sunday, June 18, 7:10 p.m. Red Sox -Juneteenth celebration at Yankees game  Fans who buy tickets via this link will receive a commemorative jersey in Juneteenth colors, along with access to a private pre-game social at The 521 Overlook with complimentary light refreshments. 

Monday, June 19, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.  The 13th annual Boston Juneteenth Emancipation Observance

The Boston Juneteenth Committee and the Museum of the National Center of Afro American Artists (NCAAA) present the 13th annual Juneteenth Emancipation Observation, starting with a flag raising at the Dillaway Thomas House in Roxbury at 11 a.m. After the flag raising is a parade to the NCAAA museum grounds on Roxbury’s Walnut Ave. The day includes speakers, live music, food and craft vendors, and family-friendly activities.

Monday, June 19, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., Museum of Fine Arts Boston free admission for Massachusetts residents in celebration of Juneteenth. Tickets, provided in partnership with Citizens, will be available on a first come, first served basis. Visitors can check out the newly opened exhibit“Hear Me Now: The Black Potters of Old Edgefield, South Carolina,” celebrating the pottery made by enslaved people in Old Edgefield in the 1800s. The day will also include art-making activities, a Spotlight Talk, and performances.

ALSO THIS WEEKEND

Sunday, June 18, start at 9 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. A great opportunity to get to know the Emerald Necklace: Full Walking Tour with ENC President!

This weekend, Emerald Necklace Conservancy President Karen Mauney-Brodek leads a special annual guided walk through the entire Emerald Necklace park system! We invite neighbors and fellow park enthusiasts on this 5.5-mile walk from Franklin Park to Charlesgate, taking in the sights, sounds and sheer scale of Boston’s largest park system like never before. This event is FREE to the public – and a great experience for Father’s Day if you’re looking for last minute ideas. The walk takes place 9am-1:30pm on Saturday, June 17, with the rain date of Sunday, June 18. THE WEEK AHEAD

Tuesday, June 20, 6-8 p.m. Fenway Civic Association Rose Garden Picnic!, This year’s picnic is dedicated to honor the memory of Edward J. Burke. Memories, flowers, friends, food & music, all you need to close out spring in a perfectly Fen-way. (rain date, June 21st).

Wednesday – Fenway Cares food distribution (see ONGOING)

Thursday – Park fitness (see ONGOING)

Fenway Cares food distribution. Need food? Fenway Cares distributes fresh produce, grains, and more at Fenway Community Center and Symphony Community Park. Next dates: Wednesday, June 21 – 3:30 p.m. 

Thursdays – Park Fitness: Chair Yoga with Michelle – 10-11:00 a.m.   Symphony Park, 39 Edgerly Road. Repeats each Thursday until August 31, 2023. Participate in a free fitness class offered by a certified instructor. Classes are sponsored by the Boston Parks and Recreation Department, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, and the Boston Public Health Commission.

The Station and 401 Park Drive park activations: This summer, soak up the fun with public programming at both The Station andThe Green at 401 Park. Experience the delights of a seasonal wine garden, test your skills on our new pickleball court, and try a new fitness class with the return of the Fit in The Fenway series. And that’s just the beginning – there’s so much more in store!
