The Week Ahead

Dear Members and Friends,

Here are some announcements about upcoming events and opportunities – this may look like a repeat of last week but scroll down for  additions!

1. #55 bus: 

You may have read about the Bus Network Redesign’s proposal to route the #55 bus to Central Square instead of continuing service downtown. NOW is the time to share your feedback with the MBTA and let them know what service YOU need. Please take their survey at: https://reginavilla.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_821isTJ0Sy2PBfE

2. Tuesday, July 26th, 6 p.m. – Sunset Concerts at Symphony Park. 39 Edgerly Road

Join us  in welcoming Nikayla and the phuNk to Symphony Park at 6 p.m. Nikayla Byirt is a cellist and multi-instrumentalist from Jacksonville, Florida. Inspired by the sounds of funk, classical, soul, and R&B, she bends the meaning of genre. Her mission is to bring back what many people miss in music while using what you may never expect to hear. All are welcome -come and bring a friend!

3. Wednesday, July 27th 9:30 a.m. – Tai Chi at Symphony Park

Join neighbors for this beginning Tai Chi Class, taught by Sifu Huan Zhang of Huan’s Tai Chi. Attendees will learn the first 13 moves of Tai Chi.

Classes are fair weather only – Symphony Park is located at 39 Edgerly Road in the East Fenway

4. Wednesday, July 27th, 1:30 p.m. – Community Preservation Meet and Greet

Join members of the Boston Preservation Committee to learn about the city’s Community Preservation Act, what it can do for your community, and requirements for applying.

Enjoy a centering start to your day with gentle chair yoga at Symphony Park, sponsored by the Boston Parks Summer Fitness Series.

All classes are fair weather only.

6. City of Boston offers Free Block Party Kits

Ever wanted to throw a block party but didn’t have supplies? Need food? Know someone who does or want to volunteer for a good cause? Fenway Cares will be distributing fresh produce, grains, and more at Fenway Community Center and Symphony Community Park.

Dear Members and Friends

We hope you had a chance to participate in this Saturday’s Fenway Porchfest, where 80+ artists and musicians shared their talents across more than 30 porchless ‘porches.’ We enjoyed the opportunity to collaborate on this event together with the Fenway Alliance and Fenway Community Development Corporation. If you have feedback or ideas for next year, please feel free to share them to fenwaycivic@aol.com.

This week, the music continues – please see the below for this week’s events:

1. Tuesday, July 12th, 6 p.m. – Sunset Concerts at Symphony Park, 39 Edgerly Road

Join FCA, the Friends of Symphony Park, and Berklee in this 4 week series of free concerts at Symphony Park. 

Concerts are fair weather only- come and bring a friend!First up: KJ JenningsKJ(Opens in a new window) is one of Berklee’s premier vocalists. In addition to awarding her a merit scholarship, Berklee has featured KJ in several of its most prominent concerts, including Singer’s Night (2019), Singer Showcase: Bond… James Bond Theme Songs (2020), and Singer Showcase: Tina Turner—Simply the Best (2021). In September 2021, KJ made her debut on national television as a contestant on season 21 of NBC’s The Voice. The 22-year-old is currently recording her debut EP, to be released this summer. 

2. Wednesday July 13th 9:30 a.m. – Tai Chi at Symphony Park, 39 Edgerly Road

Come experience free tai chi classes, taught by Sifu Huan Zhang of Huan’s Tai chi. All are welcome to this gentle class, geared for beginners. Classes are fair weather only. 

3, Wednesday, July 13th, 6:30 p.m. – Swingin’ in the Fens, free concert at Ramler Park, 130 Peterborough Street.

The sound of jazz will fill the Fenway area at Swingin’ in the Fens, the annual free concert presented by Berklee in partnership with the Boston Parks and Recreation Department’s ParkARTS. The concert takes place at Ramler Park, a jewel of the Fenway neighborhood located at 130 Peterborough Street. Picnics and folding chairs are encouraged, and the event is wheelchair accessible. (View map(Opens in a new window).) The annual concert will be on July 13, 2022, 6:30 p.m.

4. Wednesday, July 13th, 6:00 p.m. – virtual meeting, Northeastern University Task Force
A public meeting facilitated by the BPDA will be held to discuss updates to the Northeastern University’s institutional master plan regarding Snell Library. To register to attend, visit: bit.ly/39SV9ih

5. Thursday, July 14th 10:00 a.m. – Chair Yoga at Symphony Park, 39 Edgerly Road

How about a centering start to your day? Chair yoga classes are part of the Boston Parks’ Summer Fitness Series, continuing through September 29th. All classes are free – fair weather only.

6. Saturday, July 16th, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.- Fenway Garden Society Open Gardens

Stroll the more than 500 gardens in the Fenway’s Back Bay Fens as part of the Fenway Garden Society’s 80th anniversary activities.

Help welcome musicians throughout the neighborhood at our third in-person Fenway Porchfest!

Featuring 80+ artists across 30 porches in the East and West Fenway, this grassroots event celebrates the Fenway and welcomes diverse performances from around the globe.

Events will be at www.fenwayporchfest.org and include ‘porches’ from the Fenway Victory Gardens to The VerbFenway Community Center, and beyond! Don’t miss:

  • A walking Porchfest tour by the Emerald Necklace Conservancy
  • A classical music performance with youth & teaching artists and instrument petting zoo by Boston Music Project
  • A porch takeover by artist Red Shaydez at 401 Park
  • Youth circus performance by Circus Up!
  • Acts by local musicians, including Eliot Wilder, David Lank, David Ehle, and more!
